The Eagle Staff: A Symbol of Governance, Responsibility, and Community
In Indigenous cultures across Turtle Island, the Eagle Staff holds a place of profound significance. More than just a ceremonial object, it embodies the principles of governance, responsibility, and community well-being. Rooted in traditions passed down through generations, the Eagle Staff serves as a living testament to the values that guide our people and our way of life.
The Eagle Staff: A Sacred Emblem
The Eagle Staff is often seen as a counterpart to the flags and banners of other nations, but its meaning runs far deeper. Traditionally carried by a respected leader, often a woman, within the community, the Eagle Staff represents the strength, resilience, and spirit of the people. It is adorned with eagle feathers—gifts from the Creator—that signify honor, courage, and the interconnectedness of all life. The feathers, each with its own story, remind us of our responsibility to our ancestors, our lands, and future generations.
A Personal Journey: Receiving the Eagle Staff
I was honored to be chosen as the bearer of the Eagle Staff after Jumano Elder Enrique Madrid, who was entrusted with the sacred duty of seeking the next custodian. For over 50 years, Elder Madrid held the responsibility of finding the right person and the right time to pass on this sacred emblem. His role was not to bear the Staff himself but to serve as a guide and guardian, ensuring that the next bearer would carry it with the commitment to our community, culture, and values.
When he felt that the moment and the person were right, he entrusted me with this sacred responsibility. The decision was supported by the Elders of the Tall Grass Band of the Lipan Apache, who recognized the importance of continuity and the need for the Eagle Staff to remain a living symbol of our governance, traditions, and communal care. Their support affirmed my path—a path of service, humility, and dedication to the well-being of our people.
The Center for Community Complaints, Reporting, and Judgment
At the heart of the community, the Eagle Staff serves as a focal point for justice, transparency, and accountability. It stands as a symbol of the community's commitment to truth and fairness. Traditionally, those who carry the Eagle Staff are entrusted with hearing complaints, resolving disputes, and making decisions that affect the well-being of all members. It becomes the center for complaints, reporting, and judgment—a place where voices are heard, concerns are raised, and conflicts are resolved with integrity and respect.
In this role, the Eagle Staff bearer is seen not just as a leader but as a caretaker of the community’s values. They ensure that decisions are made with wisdom, compassion, and a deep understanding of both traditional teachings and the realities faced by the people today. This practice reinforces the idea that governance is not about power over others but about service, humility, and a commitment to upholding the principles that have sustained our people for generations.
A Living Symbol of Responsibility and Care
The Eagle Staff is more than a symbol; it is a living commitment to the well-being of the community. It reminds us that leadership is a sacred duty—one that requires listening to all voices, especially the most vulnerable. It represents the promise to care for the land, the water, the air, and all living beings, understanding that our actions today will impact the future.
For the bearer of the Eagle Staff, this role is not a title but a responsibility—one that is carried with great care, respect, and love for the people. It is a call to walk the path of our ancestors, to honor the teachings passed down to us, and to work tirelessly to protect the rights, dignity, and future of our community.
Honoring the Eagle Staff Today
In today’s world, where our communities face new and complex challenges, the Eagle Staff remains a guiding light. It serves as a reminder that the answers to our problems are not found in division but in unity, not in isolation but in togetherness. It challenges us to live by the values it represents: respect, responsibility, accountability, and care for one another.
As we carry forward these teachings, we honor the Eagle Staff not just in ceremony but in every action, every decision, and every relationship we build. It stands as a testament to who we are as a people, and as a promise to future generations that we will continue to uphold the principles that define us.
May the Eagle Staff always guide us in wisdom, justice, and unity.
