Darcie Little Badger
Darcie Little Badger, Lipan Apache visits Presidio ISD
People of La Junta for Preservation and Big Bend Conservation Alliance were excited to welcome Darcie Little Badger to Mrs. Madrid's sixth grade class at Presidio ISD. Darcie met students and read from her new novel, Sheine Lende. Dr. Nakaya Flotte translated so we could provide the reading in Spanish and English.
Darcie Little Badger is a Lipan Apache author of science fiction, fantasy, horror, and comics with a PhD in oceanography. Her critically acclaimed debut novel, Elatsoe, was featured in Time Magazine as one of the best 100 fantasy books of all time. Elatsoe also won the Locus award for Best First Novel and is a Nebula, Ignyte, and Lodestar finalist. Her second fantasy novel, A Snake Falls to Earth, received a Nebula Award, an Ignyte Award, and a Newbery Honor and is on the National Book Awards longlist.
Her latest novel, Sheine Lende, was just released last month and tells the story about a girl named Shane who has to use every skill at her disposal--including the ability to raise animal ghosts--to find her mother and two missing kids. Part fantasy, part mystery, fully a story of Indigenous survival. It takes place in the seventies Texas and deals with lots of disasters and barriers that affected Darcie's family.
